Dirty Local Politics? Naw, toughen up! No wimps allowed!

What is all the hub-bub about today?  I read my Union and they did a story about local politics and specifically the race for Third District Supervisor.  The news story was based on the political ad favoring Dan Miller and smacking sitting Supervisor Terry Lamphier.  I think everyone needs to calm down.

The Union asked R.L.Crabb, their resident cartoonist and a fellow who makes his living drawing cartoons sniping fun at people and things, for his opinion.  He cited the Van Zant vs Seghezzi campaign of 2000 as a benchmark of nastiness and said he even drew a cartoon about it.  Oh golly, the Van Zants and Seghezzi's were just so nasty!  What a hoot! All of this angst of offense is ridiculous.  One only needs to go back to the Van Zant campaign when he manged incumbent Jim Weir's campaign (Paul Emery was there too) for re-election to see Van Zant's style.  All that went on was way over the top but in the end Fran Grattan, now Freedle, won the race by 49 votes.  The Third District was always a close one and every little thing positive or negative, could decide the Supervisor.

Back in the days before I was elected in November of 1984, Karsten Hansen (of Hanson Brothers was the Third District Supervisor.  If I recall correctly, he beat Marianne Slade twice and each race was by about ten votes!  The District is usually anti-incumbent and the only one I recall winning twice was Jim Weir.  In District One the races I won were also close but as we all know, one vote over even makes you the victor.  In order to win every candidate has their own style and some use a incumbents votes and words against them.  I did this in 1984 during the primary and somewhat in the general election.

I personally did the research of every single vote contained in the public records of the County Supervisors office.  I also read the transcripts of those votes.  I then compiled a chart that showed those facts and they were very effective.  I was clear on each point and showed the date of the vote and the page containing the vote and transcript in the record.  Even though any lamebrain could check my ad, thereby verifying the truth, the opposition attacked me personally and upped the ante of hateful speech and ads.  I was taken aback since all the information was from the public record.

After the incumbent saw what was going on, instead of debating the votes the people supporting the incumbent went door to door and made vile personal attacks on me.  But I never complained as I knew it was politics.  The bottom line was I won and then I won again four years later.  In the 1988 campaign I had the record then and to my surprise my opponents never did the research to debate my votes.  Instead they went door to door and personally slimed me and my family.  Again, I never complained and I won again.  The bottom line is that a incumbent has a record and if that record is exposed they are sometimes held accountable.  In 1988 I thought they would do the research but I guess they were too lazy.

So we have Mr. Crabb whose world view on local races must have only started in the year 2000 so hopefully I have filled in a few years prior to that.  I believe that "negative" ads work unfortunately.  People usually don't say "golly, what  a great guy/gal and his/her votes are so like me".  Usually the press doesn't report on the government votes, maybe a few, so the opponents of an incumbent usually are the one's who do the work.  This season of campaigning is perhaps the least negative I have seen in many years.  Most of the negative lies in campaign ads have been by liberals and democrats over the years.  Democrats were the first too endorse in local non-partisan races and they have never, to the best of my recollection, ever endorsed a Republican for a non-partisan office.  This year the Republicans endorsed Cliff Newell who I believe is a registered democrat.  So if there is any high ground in the county body politic, it is held by the Republicans.

I am sure that Terry Lamphier can take the slings and arrows as well he should.  I was once an incumbent as he is now and you just have to keep your big boy pants on and deal with reality.  I was directed to another local liberal blog that also commented on the Union article from this morning.  I just shook my head that people are so thin skinned and think things are so terrible in local politics.  It is a cake walk here, no big deal.

  1. The local extreme left (aided and abetted by Pelline) are in a tizzy, because Dan Miller and Hank Weston are going to beat their challengers by double digits. Pay the unwarranted criticism no mind...just put your head down and keep moving "forward."

BTW...Jeff's article is libelous in that he accuses Miller of coordination by stating that he could have stopped the independent expenditure. A retraction is likely in order.

  2. jeffy is whining about people being mean to him again…and he's been pawing through the tax records again in an attempt to embarrass his neighbors…..sigh…..I wonder if his shaming of the nuns regarding their tax delinquency resulted in additional moneys finding their way into county coffers?

  3. Pelline is no stranger to libel; he never did retract his baseless claim I'd had a temper tantrum at a Constitution Day parade. Made it up out of whole cloth. He did offer to 'apologize' for it, if only I'd retract a statement that he was universally despised at The Union, which had been relayed to me by someone I trust at The Union. Damned if I was going to retract a statement I believed to be true in order to get Pelline to stop lying through his teeth.

I also am open about referring to Jeff as the fattest man in Nevada City... if he can make up lies about me, I can state an arguable truth about Jeff. What a maroon!

"Now [Gregory], who has strong opinions about Marching Presidents, Common Core standards, and global warming, has weighed in on Todd’s blog with the same set of lies and personal attacks that he likes to dredge up to support his like-minded pals “when the going gets tough.” That is the MO of this group. It never is persuasive but that doesn’t stop them: Prop. 23 was summarily rejected locally (to “global-warming Greg’s” disappointment), Barry lost the election to Diaz for clerk-recorder in every precinct, and Todd had a short-lived return as CABPRO’s founder. The political “purpleness” of our County infuriates these people. But it has arrived."

I retain the email Jeff the FUE sent me the day he made the completely false and unsupportable claim of the temper tantrum, and it does offer to apologize for that claim if I'd do the same for the report of his being "universally despised" at The Union, made to me by someone who was at The Union during Pelline's short tenure there.

"I told him about you temper tantrum at the Constitution Day parade! LOL

Jeff really is a big, fat liar.

I will be happy to retract, with apologies, the statement that Jeff is the fattest man in Nevada City as soon as an adult male fatter than he can be identified. A resident, not a tourist.

  4. Pelline the bully is bullying others. This is rich. We have all seen this one before.

    http://barrypruett.blogspot.com/2010/08/intimidation-and-retaliation-tactics.html

"Several sources described the e-mails from Pelline to Bond as 'threatening' and said Pelline had promised that not a further word of ink about the Foundry would appear in print if the paper was not allowed to participate in the election night event."

"Intimidation and retaliation tactics have long been one of...Pelline's, main ways of dealing with dissent in the community. One reader commented to Pelline about the paper's absolute absence of critical editing. Pelline contacted one of that reader's clients and tried to get him fired."

    A true bully.

Also, The former Union editor's explanation does not hunt. He is accusing someone of doing something illegal and as such the accusation is libelous. An honest person would delete or retract the statement...but Pelline is no honest person.

  6. Jeff: Please sue me for libel, so that I can depose Jeff Ackerman. He can then tell us the circumstances of your departure from The Union without threat of prosecution from you. That deposition will be posted on my blog for sure. LOL.

  7. The Pelline tactics of bullying are usually done by liberals with too much time on their hands. I thought he said he was just so busy he had no time right now.

For me, all this is as the effeminate Truckee fellow says is "kabuki theater" and drama queen crap. Pelline can't do anything to me since I am simply a little fellow with a little blog and I could give a rats ass about his threats or exposures to embarrass. I simply don't care. Besides, nothing is as simple as it seems Pelline. Too funny!

This political season is truly quiet and I thank all the candidates for that. I would say Lamphier and Miller are staying above the fray as Hank and his opponents are as well. Does my heart good.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Too true. The fact of the matter is that Miller and Weston have run positive, uplifting campaigns, and they will both win by dounle digits. This conservative trend will continue into the future too which is disheartening to the local left (including Pelline).

As was pointed out to me a couple days ago by a good friend, someone who is "middle of the road" would ocassionally criticize the extreme left in this community, but as we see on the FUE's blog, such criticism never happens and the silence is deafening.

While the FUE is intent on attempting to malign conservatives, there is no mention of the truly dishonest smear campaign by the extreme liberal challenger to Cliff Newell. In my experience, Cliff is truly an honest and good man. Mailers were sent out to local liberals by the extreme liberal challenger to Cliff Newell attacking Cliff's former spouse. It does not get anymore dirty than that...but what do we hear from the "purple one"...crickets. Not very "middle of the road" now is it?

    1. I think the FUE is mad because he is of the mind "if it bleeds it leads" like every other ambulance chasing "journalist".

    2. This is what the FUE had to say about Barry's comments: "This cracks me up: I have a 30-year career as a journalist, having worked at The Chronicle for more than a decade, helped launch CNET (that was sold to CBS for $2 billion), having won a prestigious National Magazine Award, started a successful new venture up here, won work in competitive RFP process, and this guy Pruett (whose own resume included this ugly episode http://sierrafoothillsreport.com/2010/04/21/what-is-rui-apple-computer/) is now passing judgement on my career and accomplishments. Small towns are a hoot! You have to figure out a way to interact with people who aren’t in your professional league — and never will be. Pruett is one of them."

Here's a possibility that fits the above quote and everything else I've noticed with Jeff...
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism#Aggressive_narcissism

Sure sounds like textbook narcissism to me as, I have as yet to meet anyone who worked with Pelline at The Union who agreed he was in their league... "universally despised" was one opinion. Perhaps someone at The Union, CNET or the Chronicle who liked working with Jeff will chime in. Or maybe even bring him into their LinkedIn network and vouch for his skills; none of his endorsements for Journalism and Newspapers seems to be from any newspaper or are journalists.

In the same thread, Jeff claims what I wrote here was just more of my "same set of lies and personal attacks that he likes to dredge up to support his like-minded pals “when the going gets tough.” but wasn't specific what those "lies" might be. I can document what I write about Jeff, the opposite is not true. Jeff, come clean, there was no "temper tantrum" from me, ever, including at a Constitution Day celebration, and you did offer to apologize for writing there was if only I'd retract the "universally despised" claim I truthfully relayed from a The Union associate of the time.

Admit it... do you know any man in Nevada City as obese as you are?

Why the admitted below the belt personal attack on the Corpulent one? Because if he'll lie about me, I'll feel free to throw some truthful mud on his self image.

      -Gregory

PS stop the presses... is Pelline embellishing his past? He claims in one bio to have been Editor at CNET News from '96 to 2004, but googling CNET and news.com his byline there seems to be a constant "Jeff Pelline, Staff Writer", the same as the previous gig at the Chronicle. Perhaps there's a simple exculpatory explanation? I did find an obit for a journalist circa 2004 that mentions Jeff to be an editor, and a cnet page dated 2005 that lists him as an editor... though Jeff states in the bio the cnet gig ended in 2004.

Good debate and close votes and good partisan rancor nake a better country and state. But with the democrat party in control after they ran out the job makers and tax payers and replaced them with good, democrat voters on the dole, this is what you get. We do have a few places left where sanity is still in control. Our area of the mountains is one.

    2. the right seems oblivious to the fact that history is passing them right by and they don't even know it. President Obama's EPA action on coal will lead many more states to adopt CA style carbon trading. We are in the midst of a major energy transition but still people are in denial with head firmly in sand. And CA has led much of it!

    3. California has lead it Anon @12:24. The heads are where the sun doesn't shine. You want a lawless country where the only lawbreakers are the lelecteds from the State? You got it. You want to run all the productive people out? You are in the right place. All those people fleeing the state that can are being backfilled by tax takers. Double edged sword. Yep, my once great golden state is now a dull pbrass and all the things we should believe in from our Governor and the kids under the dome are BS. We still have a 18 billion dollar deficit but the lazy press just stenographers the lies that the state doesn't and on we go.

Cap and Trade did not work in the free market. The attempts in the Chicago Mercantile failed so as usual, when it can't make it happen in the private sector, Obama/Brown?lins force the rules down our throsys. EPA rules will be fought hard for coal and water jurisdiction. The war is just beginning.

    4. Phasing out coal was a long, long time in the making. Now those states have flexibility to adjust, adapt and move to new industries under the EPA rule. Coal areas in large part are absolutely miserable places to live in any type of semi-healthy manner. The human suffering, disease, mental illness and quality of life are the absolute worst in coal country. Phasing out coal, for lack of a better term, is GOOD.

BTW, CA Cap and Trade is already working and companies in other states are even seeing business opportunities with their technologies to reduce, restrict and capture carbon. Interesting article recently in the NYTimes. The market is exceeding what even Mary Nichols was projecting so early on.

    5. Sorry but you just are mouthing the talking points put out by the eco loons. Coal has warmed people for a gazillion years. With all the technology now the air released in the smokestacks is mostly water vapor. Oh, and water vapor in the atmosphere by the ocean evaporated by the sun makes up most of the "green house" gases. But the fools of ignorance still believe man is the cuse.

CAP and TRADE is a flop. Look at it and you will see public utilities are the ones putting in the money. And no one is buying! Also, those utilities simply raise the rates after they publish their intent to do so and the PUC approves. We are being being bent over and given the big one! And you just keep drinking the koolaid.

    6. I like the drink, and besides, the train bound for the new era of energy has already left the station. You guys are just blind. Dirty coal powered energy is going the way of the dino, both through private sector realities and government regulations now. Thank god we're not being warmed the way they were gazillions of years ago! Ever been to Appalachia? God forsaken places with deathly ill poor people that coal and greedy corporations have raped and left behind. Nice thing, that coal.

    7. Worldwide, coal will not be abandoned until cost per usable joule is above other energy sources. Coal remains cheap, and California isn't leading the country on anything other than municipalities near bankruptcy.

If we don't burn it, our competitors will. And are.

A juicy bit of irony remains the major supercomputing facility built to run climate simulations, the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center... they put it in Wyoming to take advantage of cheap electricity from... coal.

I listened to the speech today in Warsaw by the Polish President. He was great! Lech Walesa was there too. Obama then did his usuall rhetoric without backbone speech. It is as if he has no clue about what he and the left have done to America. The juxtaposition of Poland bootnig out the Soviets 25 years ago and gaining freedom and Obama, our Mr. Regulator in Chief diminishing our freedoms, was so interesting.

The sad thing to me was Obama was attempting to show some backbone and no one believes him.

    10. While it might be made less important thanks to the abundance of fracked natural gas, coal won't be going away for centuries. Once the global warming hysteria subsides, we will be able to rationally discuss energy policies; in the meantime, we'll have to agree to disagree.

    11. Agreed, in many other places on the globe, coal unfortunately will continue to be a major source of energy for many more years. But its reign is going to rapidly come to an end in the US IMO. And among America's young people, the concept and belief of AGW is not going to subside, it will continue to build. With the EPA regs and a serious America, China and others will see our comitment and begin to phase out the wide scale use of coal. The Chinese are no idiots- they know the pollution challenge they already face every day in many cities. It is not sustainable wtih coal in the mix in any big way.

    12. "And among America's young people, the concept and belief of AGW is not going to subside, it will continue to build."

There's not a chance this will happen in the medium term; we're entering a solar minimum and the bigger question is how long it will take before the institutions that switched from raising a global cooling scare to global warming (like Stanford's Woods Institute), switch back to warning about a new ice age.
