Matthew Perry is an addict. I did not know that. Watch this video

My daughter sent me a link to a debate between Matthew Perry and this English Fellow Peter Hitchens (brother of the late Christopher Hitchens).  I did a story on Christopher's passing.  There was also a English woman Baroness Meacher, who chaired some kind of English drug program committee.  When you listen to Perry, you can see that he truly has lost some brain cells to alcohol.  He was childish and constantly attacked Hitchens who believes addiction is not a disease but a choice.

Hitchens made a good case but Perry was a boor.  He even looks toasted on this set.  I was a Perry fan as a comedy actor.  I thought he could be a Cary Grant for the present generation.  But apparently he can't drink more than one or he becomes uncontrollable and a drunkard.  That is his self diagnosis.

Regardless of which way you believe, addiction is a disease or a choice, there was on display a spoiled petulant man, Perry, being skunked by a erudite intelligent Brit.  I just enjoy listening to the Brits talk. Take that Hollywood liberals!

  1. There are many addictions. We human beings are amazing...we have the power to choose whatever we want to be. I've known a few addicts during my lifetime and as always they are in charge of where they want to go. As the County Health Officer once told a Supervisor friend of mine, "Rehab is a waste of time and money if the person doesn't want to change." And we do have that power within. Something that really gets to me is when addicts blame their problem on others..."You don't know what kind of family I came from, " or "I was abused..." So my answer to these excuses is, "You know and detest what it was like, then why are you doing the same thing to your family?" There is no excuse if you don't like that behavior towards you, and what you're doing to others. That's why I admire those people like Phil Robertson who have been there, done that, know the difference and because of their effort changing to a better life...they in turn show others the way to go. Bless their hearts.

    1. Excellent comments on addiction. I too have known people who have taken control of themselves and with will power have beaten back their "addiction". Blaming others is just a cop-out for weakness in character. We have a brain and GOD knows if we use it right good things can come of it. America is plagued by weak willed addicts of crack and other drugs and habits. Many lives are ruined because of the human weakness to illicit pleasure spots in the brain. The only people who win are the Mexican and Colombian drug cartels who relish the weakness of American will power.

  2. Gotta love the Tea Party like ignorance that surrounds this blog and every single topic like this. Anti-science, anti-reality. This guy Hitchens reminds us of so many right wing fanatics and politicians who rely on their skewed interpretation of speeches from "founding fathers" of another era. Perry stuck to the facts of the science of addiction and made Hitchens look like an ignorant fool, like a guy who could easily be debating the truth of creationism. The reliance on ignorance by so many of his ilk is stunning. But Perry won out on the merits.

    1. You should watch the video. Perry was a stoned out dude. Hitcjhens is no conservative. Instead of making ridiculous unfactual statements perhaps some study for you is in order.

    2. One can only feel sadness with your ignorance of addiction diseases. Ignorance is a choice, not a disease.
