Democrats/Liberals lost big in Nevada County in the Primary and other stuff

I have waited a while to discuss the results of local races here as I waited for the final tally to be completed. HERE they are.  It looks to me that despite their best efforts to get out their vote here, the democrats were rejected soundly by the county voters.  But of course there are always those that can't accept their defeats with grace and try to put lipstick on the pig.  One local blogger claims the county is "purple" but after reviewing the results one must admit we are a center right county. Based on this I would say that blogger is "hard left".

We have seen few changes in governance here over the years.   I believe the adage, "all politics is local" is so true. Whether City, County or Special District, the people closest to the voters are the most responsive and the most accountable.  Don't fill the potholes?  Your elected butt gets tossed.  Don't balance the budget get your butt booted.  Don't support law enforcement, you are outta here.    I think the main duty of local government is  support for law enforcement.  That makes the local voter more conservative in my view.  We want the Sheriff and the police to get the bad guys off the streets and into the jails.  Democrats want to cuddle the crooks and then spend our money for rehab and vouchers.  You can see who the voters choose.

When I read bloggers or letters to the editor in the local paper from liberals/democrats, I simply shake my head in wonder.  How can people be so stupid?  Usually they have some bleeding heart plea to be nice to the drug dealer feeding the poison to our kids.  They plea to spare the life of the death row scumbag who murdered women and children and did depraved things to them.  They trust the government to teach our kids with their leftwingnut views and distorted and rewritten history.  The left complains about those evil people who own guns or favor life over the murder of the child in the womb as if they are on some sort of moral high ground.  Each and every time I read their tripe and complaints I see the decline of our country and way of life.

Of course I totally support the left's right to speak their BS and would not try to censor any of it.  I want to debate them.  But the left has other ideas.  Even here in little Nevada County we have liberals/democrats who want to muzzle the opposition who speak against their ideas and theories.  The left does not like dissent from their mantra that only they have the right to speak.  A local blogger from the left is constantly trying to make some absurd connection between the actions of some lunatics and mainstream people and organizations on the right.  Stirring it up may work at higher levels of push-polls but not here in our community.  For sure there are a few on the left that the bloggers spewing confirms their opinions but only a few.  I have heard it is very quiet and slow on those leftwingnut loony blogs.

Mainly people want their government to stay out of their lives and leave them in peace.  But we all know that is not the reality on the ground with government.  Locally we have more say in that and we usually don't see too many new ordinances in a given year.  Of course the locals are part time and most have a business so they are fairly sensitive to the affect of new laws on their friends and neighbors.  But at the State and Federal level, we have a whole different animal.

Last year there was 80,000 pages of Federal Register rules and regulations spewed forth on the people of America.  It is how something becomes the law of the land.  Then we have all the State Laws and regulations.  Then we have all the Executive Departments that are allowed to make their own "fill-in-the-blank" rules and regulations after the Legislature passes and the Governor signs a new "law".  I have railed against that all my political life.  Unlike a local ordinance that must be complete prior to the vote, the State and Feds just say "implement this law" to the departments and the "lawmakers" go back to the golf course.  We see how this works every day.  The EPA passes new regulations on coal, water courses, standards of any type and when the crap hits the fan with the constituents, the lawmakers act surprised and angry.  What a crock!  If they had done their job as local officials must do we would see way less bills.  All the parts should be debated as they are in a City Council Chamber or Board of Supervisors Chamber prior to passage.  Then there is the referendum if people don't like them.

We have allowed all these rules and regulations to control most aspects of our lives because in a Republic America, well at least the America I used to know, people were working and too busy raising their families to spend their time in Chambers of politicians to make sure they weren't getting screwed.  But that was when we had a true "press".  We knew the reporters were giving us the truth most of the time.  But over the last forty years the "press" has simply become a branch of the democrat party and we can no longer rely on them at all.  Thank goodness for alternative media like the Internet and and talk radio.  And activist Conservative groups!

We see the disenfranchisement of the American voter from the easy truth once written by those protected by the First Amendment.  So we rely on these other sources of information.  Some are blogs masquerading on the left as news as we see a local one or two.  Others supply links that allow the readers to pursue news and information of their own choice.  Others are debate centers.  But the left, once the source of most of American news no longer has a monopoly.  They do however have an agenda and they are united in that agenda.  They all attended "liberal arts" colleges and were trained by "liberal" professors" all of one "liberal" mind.  So the results of that is "leftwingnut hegemony" in our lamestream media outlets.

All in all though, Americans are a center-right people and that really shows up locally here.  Sure the left has California and the Yankee states (New Mexico and Colorado though amaze me) but for the rest of the country, common sense prevails.  Locally the "purple" blogger and his three or four leftwingnut minions don't know diddly about the county and its people but hey!  This is America and those leftwing nuts have every right to spew their nonsense.  I say congrats to all the winners of June 3, 2014 and to those that did not make it.  I say good try.  I won some and I lost some so I know both sides of an election.

  1. Good piece Todd. I hope that nationwide we are still a center right people. It would be a disaster otherwise.

  2. Those supposed center right voters of Nevada County seem to prefer Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom and are nearly 50/50 on every partisan heads up progressive vs. conservative election. Several cycles now.
I see the area as purple as well, maybe he most purple area in the state.

And national elections are trending more and more center left, as Mr.Romney discovered.

As Jerry admitted during the run up to his prior election when he was caught on tape saying, ".....I've got the unions in my pocket", he was right! They have backed him wholeheartedly. There's your purple hued overpriced choo-choo flavored union support for Uncle Jerry.

Gavin Newsome.....he's a pretty man from San Francisco......and pretty men from San Francisco get elected to unimportant positions like lieutenant governor in the Sate of California.

Anyway California is hardly a good indicator for what i.e. prog vs conservative.

Maybe not your specific area. People who retire to the foothills tend to lean conservative. But I agree.... in general the state as a whole does seem to be trending center-left. It's going to be interesting once the states money problems start to hit hard in about six years....tough to fund all that purple then.

I see the area as purple as well, maybe he most purple area in the state.

Nahh....the most purple area in the state is the area under jeffys waistband after a day of yard work.

    5. Still haven't answered the question- except for flippant offhand, irrelevant comments about unions... If it such a conservative dominated place, how do you explain half the primary electorate, skewed admittedly conservative for the primary, voting for Jerry Brown? I've never heard a positive word for Jerry Brown out of any local right wingers.

    6. Todd, you and Fish make good points here as well.

      Delete
    7. Fish makes no sense actually. Todd has one or two points that are accurate. But everything in Nevada County is virtually 50/50. The most purple county in the state, and GV may be the most purple spot among the purple. The registration rolls tells you what you need to know, and the District 3 race came down to turnout demographics and a candidate plastering his signs and mailers everywhere.

And yet the early results went TEAM RED in convincing fashion. Get back to me when we are having recounts.

The registration rolls tells you what you need to know....

This didn't seem to be the case in the primary. Maybe you will be right in the general.

...and the District 3 race came down to turnout demographics and a candidate plastering his signs and mailers everywhere.

Gee wonder which guy here... "making no sense actually" said this? "Again older demographics seems to skew more conservative than younger....more's the pity."

Turnout...Campaign signs...mailers....wow?! What novel concepts to employ in a political campaign.

All the rest of his/her comments are ridiculous. Politics contains many aspects. Among them are , signs, ads, radio, TV, direct mail, and volunteers to get thier voters to turnout. I did it twice here and have a tad bit of experience. I would like to know Anon's experience. Please tell us who you are for real (I think we all know) and how many races you have run.

What is "such a conservative dominated place"? If you are referring to Nevada county.... it certainly seems to be. Again older demographics seems to skew more conservative than younger....more's the pity. And where else is a California "Middle of the Roader" democrat going to go at this time other then with Uncle Jerry?

The republicans are just going to have to stew at the state level.

By my count that is two R's in non partisan contests. Would not call Heidi Hermanson and Cliff Newell exactly politico Republicans. D Greg Diaz won more votes than R Sue Horne. Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom won big within the same electorate. ie, a MIXED BAG.

    4. Dan Miiler won huge. Incumbents automatically start with an inherent five point lead and the incumbent lost by seven. Smashing loss. We have yet to know how Brown and Newsom will do in the general in Nevada County. Big wins across the board. As far as Hermanson, shw almost lost to a guy that started in March. Your assessment is lipstick on a pig.

With regards to this piece of insightful bloggery, it's interesting that we have regulatory agencies that regulate things like coal. It's kind of like a GI Doctor being interested in the colon.

I figure if we remove all of the regulatoriness and keep the pressure up with this fine Dragon Breathe blogging, we should be able to have a coal burning stoves at our Penn Valley headquarters in no time. Then the rest of the county. It's important that all citizens of Nevada County get to experience the joys of coal.

      Delete
    3. You already do. 40% or more of the electricity generated in America is from coal. So your laptop computer you are using in the toilet while taking a pooh is dependent on the coal. Be sure to use TP and don't touch anyone until you wash your hands with soap.

    4. First of all, we do not use Laptops at the Scooper. Everyone is required to use an iPad 2 or a Selectric III. Not the crappy IIs. We allow employees to choose. I use a typewriter exclusively like our third editor did. Our first two just shouted at everyone.

Secondly, we have outhouses in Penn Valley and we use corn husks to wipe. It's been that way forever. I hear that's a code requirement in Lake Wildwood, although I couldn't get past the gates to ask anyone. Perhaps I need to just speed through there on my Hog at 45mph to get someone's attention.

Thricely, even more reason to burn coal for heat. I'm certain we could come up with a clean coal furnaces and stoves. Imagine the joy on our children's faces when we tell them to go shovel coal into the hopper. Pile and piles of coal in every yard.

Now, if you excuse me, we have a couple of scoops to attend to.

      Chat with you soon.

  8. For District 3 Supervisor it was Dan Miller 2,580 votes, 52.79%. Terry Lamphier 2,307 votes, 47.21%. Lamphier being the incumbent had an advantage going into the race and he still got rejected by the voters. The public fired Lamphier after he served one term. Lamphier crowed he had more supporters. Lamphier had more signs, more mailers and Lamphier resorted to nasty, negative, false mailers and he lost. Lamphier took endless out of county union money that funded the majority of his campaign. Jim Firth, leader of the local Dem's was Lamphier's right hand man during the election. The Nevada County Dem's were Lamphier's main support and they lost. Jim Firth ran for Grass Valley City Council a while back and was also rejected by the voters. Lamphier ran for Grass Valley City Council a few times and he was rejected by the voters. Lamphier was fired, the Nevada County Dem's were rejected, out of county union money failed and after they lost they now want to blame low voter turn out for their losses?

    1. 5 points, not 7 points unless one is using some alt math. The amount of signs and mailers- pure opinion. Most others saw Miller plastering his campaign everywhere imaginable in the area. He won on exposure, being a Mayor, as well as turnout advantage, that is clear. Everyone including my iguana knows Repubs came out in stronger force in the midterms, thats not even debatable.

      Delete
    2. Lamphier did not even hold his votes from the last cycle on the BOS and that was a good turnout. Forget about Furth and crew for the Grass Valley council. The tough girls who care about kids and victims will own the day and keep sharing the truth beyond the economic propaganda that Furth tries to pretend he cares about.

  9. Miller votes were 5.58% over Lamphier votes, rounding up gets you to 6%. Not even debatable is Terry Lamphier and his right hand man Jim Forth were rejected by the voters, once again. The reason Terry Lamphier lost is because the voters rejected him for a second term. Terry Lamphier's nasty, negative, false mailers also turned voters against him. Terry Lamphier was fired by the voters and that's not debatable, it's fact..

    1. Wow, it certainly seems the post election nastiness is coming from the Miller camp, as you have shown in your post. Never heard anyone call Terry or his mailers nasty and negative, until you had to let the bitterness roll.

In summary, a close election in a year when votes were sleeping, in a very diverse district. Last time, the conservative lost/got fired, this time it reversed. Cycles back and forth in D3, as the rolls certainly show such an even split.

      Delete
    2. As an observer of you two anonymous folks from opposite camps. D3 has always been a close one so a victory over 100 vote margin is a big one. Also, I would suggest that if Miller lost and was using the terms "nasty" etc., then I would expect sour grapes. There is no "sour grapes" from a vistor. Also, I think Terry has been very much a gentleman in not showing "sour grapes".

      Delete
  10. The only nasty, attack mailers in the D3 race came from Lamphier's campaign. This isn't opinion, it's fact. All one needs to do is review the mailers sent out by Miller and Lamphier campaigns for the truth.

    1. You need to really give it up, as Todd suggests. Everything you state is your biased opinion, not fact. I did review the mailers. Believe me, got all of them in droves. Have to say that both direct campaigns did stick to their accomplishments and goals and visions for D3, even though I certainly think Terrys vision is a better one. If someone like you perceives a different vision for the area as something nasty, thats your problem. There is not a nasty bone in Terry's body, he is indeed a gentleman of the highest order as Todd reminds us. Hey, the attack piece by Miller supporters against Terry in the paper- that was nasty in the view of many, many people. So lets move on.

So how about we move o

    2. No doubt Terry is a nice guy. That siad he did sned out mailers demonstrating his support for the Dorsey exchange when in the media he was blasting Dan for his support. Not very honest.

  11. Barry Pruett is correct.Terry Lamphier made all kinds of false claims in his attack mailers and in the media that Dan Miller was part of a conspiracy to fund and build the Dorsey interchange for a couple of developers. This is completely false. Dorsey Interchange has been in the works for over 30 years, for the benefit of the entire region.

Lamphier did this while also saying he supported the Dorsey interchange construction while seeking votes and campaign money from labor unions. The unions were a major funder on Lamphier's campaign. Then there's the $5,000 in campaign cash Terry Lamphier took from the developer of the Rincon Del Reo project a few weeks after he voted to approve their project, all the time bashing Dan Miller for taking campaign money from the local contractors association and calling Dan Miller a shill for developers that want to destroy our county. These are facts, not opinion.
