Nevada City/County Liberals, Elitist, Smartasses and Ungrateful

Over on George Rebane's blog a discussion has been going on about what makes a good community.  If anyone wants to read why there is a great divide between leftwing nuts and the rest of us, you don't have to read their comments past the first paragraph to realize their "self-importance".

These elitist liberals moved here from other elitist areas of California "mainly", and brought their nasty attitudes with them.  Of course, they all left the areas they personally wrecked, like LA, SF and San Jose, then after arrival and after unloading their prized medicinal seeds they start politicking.  They started coming here in the early 70's and moving to the large established subdivisions (with cheap lots proces of course) and then into Nevada City.

Sure, we corn-pone hayseeds welcomed them at first but it was not soon after these lovelies settled in that their attitudes started to penetrate the local scene.  And it wasn't pretty.  Soon they started to circulate initiatives to stop all the issuance of building permits (100 maximum per year) for all those that might want to move here.  That is when things started getting hot.  The real catalyst was the new state of California requirements for "General Plans" to force all jurisdictions to look at environmental impacts of any projects.  Most people were OK with that since we all want a clean and safe environment.  What has happened though is quite different.

It soon became apparent here the GP process was hijacked by the left and their selfishness (and hypocrisy) transformed into rules and laws to control others.  Even though the intent of the GP law was only to judge impacts on the environment and to mitigate them, the left, here and since then all over the state, used it to control and abolish property rights.  Gold mining, timber harvesting, construction, almost anything these lovelies did not like they went after and either shut them down (gold dredging is the latest) or regulated them into oblivion.  Nevada City became the poster child for that sort of regulation strategy. (Look at the NID re-licensing for their dams as an example)

But it is the attitude of the left here that is the most troubling.  If you like historical living, you know, family, calm get togethers, churchy stuff, whatever a nuclear family and a close knit community might really be, the left goes apoplectic.  They just think the locals are hillbillies and say so all the time.  These liberals want it their way.  Their way is to change all the things that attracted them here in the first place.  Go figure.
I got involved in politics in 1978 to fight the onerous initiatives A and B put on the ballot by these lovelies.  We yokels banded together and defeated those measures quite handily.  We had common sense and knew what would happen if those no-growth measures passed.  (Sometimes I regret our victory since the subsequent lefties are even worse), but I digress.

Our State has led the way in enabling leftwingnut regulations and policies.  Nevada County and its cities have embraced those policies over time and we see the results.  Nevada City is frozen in time and though it is pretty, it is headed for boarded up shops once again.  The county has seen a almost zero growth rate over the last twenty years and we just can't seem to make a dent in progress.  Every project, no matter how small, is given the anal exam and the proponents must pay for the privilege of the painful colonoscopy.  So, over time, the left has really won.  They have ratcheted down freedom to even paint your house and in the county to build what you want where you want on your own land.

I have done my share of community things and I even was a part of the acting community in the 80's.  I appreciate "culture" and attend many events.  But if you are a "local" even my favorable attitude about "culture" is ridiculed by these elitist lefty's.  But I have a pretty thick skin.  I have dealt with the leftwingnut hypocrites for 35 years now and there is little they can say that riles me anymore.  I have heard it all.  If there is a divide in our county it was not created nor sustained by we locals.  It is in place and coddled by the leftwingnuts that want to tell the rest of us how to live our lives, where to build our homes, what light fixture to install and which car to drive.  We locals were simply naive when we welcomed these lovelies into the county and it has bitten us all right on the ass cheeks.

    4. You went on a rant about how the lefties have moved to Nevada County and have taken over, why would my original comment be considered irrational or illogical? Clean drinking water, rivers that flow, air that isn't filled with carcinogens, and forests that aren't clear cut all seem like common sense policies but then again I am squarely in the left and you are a corporatist that subscribes to profit over people.

  3. Seems the "thick skinned" Mr. Juvinall just pulled a Mitt Romney, insulting half the residents of the area via that long, angry, stereotyped and insulting rant. So very Christian of him.

  5. If it wasn't for us pagans there would be a French owned trash hydro project a couple of miles upstream from the 49'r bridge that would have used eminent domain powers to take peoples land and flood their property. The Frenchies were moving in to take advantage of loopholes in the FERC process to provide a tax write off for investors in a lising project, much like the Canadians and the Idaho Maryland mine. It took a lot of community effort to keep local control over our rivers and ground water that was not assisted by Todd or his pals who fought us tooth and nails. The historical ordinance in Nevada City and Grass Valley was local government taking charge. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be?

    1. PaulE, you don't know squat about me apparently. I campaigned against the run of the river dam you schnook. I was on SYRCL's side. I am surprised you don't remember. Or do you? I left SYRCL when they went for Wild and Scenic. So, how about an apology? A real heartfelt mea culpa. Regarding the IMM I am all for it. Timber harvests, I am all for them. Mining and dredging, I am all for them. Oil development, all for it. Farming corn for food, all for it. Worm farms, not so much. PaulE, you have lost my confidence in your truthfulness.

I was an original board member of SYRCL and I don't remember you being in the trenches during the battles with Northwest Power, the French company that had options to dam the Yuba. Actually it was Nevada County that first wanted to develop the dam but they pulled out. Perhaps that's where you helped. Were you on the Supes in 83? Were you on a committee or did you participate in any direct action against the project? I don't recall you being part of the opposition and I was deeply involved. Can you share details of your involvement? If so I stand corrected.

    3. paulE, you need some gingo bilboa then. I was a Supervisor and voted to ask FERC to defeat the permit. Keep trying to salvage your poor memory and poor fcts checking.

Oh and before I was a Supervisor, SYRCL gave us all a questionnaire and I answered in the affirmative (1984). It was a well publicized document during the Supe race. Amazing! So maybe you forgot you were in the trenches or on their Board? Were you off the juice? LOL!

    4. So Todd,
You were in favor of damming up the Yuba. If yes, luckily you lost because the Yuba is one of the most beautiful rivers in America. I saw what the dams did to the Colorado and it is shameful. What is worse is the revision of history that justifies the Glenn Canyon Dam today or as Edward Abbey called it, the sewage lagoon.

Thanks Paul for preserving the Yuba and having some forward thinking that has generated a huge attraction that has helped our local economy.

      http://www.outsideonline.com/adventure-travel/best-towns/Best-Towns-Nevada-City-California.html
"But readers consistently cited one selling point: the “magical,” “sun-hugged,” “granite-lined” Yuba River. Seven miles north of town, the South Fork of the Yuba offers trout fishing, Class V kayaking, and summer lounging as it flows through a granite gorge in the Sierra foothills. “The most beautiful river I’ve ever seen,” says local Judy Meyers. But there’s culture, too. As Mike Mooers, creative director at Wicked Good Copy and Communications, puts it: “Nevada City has all the outdoorsy stuff but also some seriously rooted heart and soul.” "

    5. Since your first line s a lie I did not read the rest.

    7. Why in the heck would anyone be opposed to the Yuba River Wild and Scenic designation? Todd, that was really stupid of you!

Holy moly, that was the single most important milestone in the foothills during the 20th century!

    8. Very smart of me. The libs went out of the county to a Bay Area State Senator and circumvented the locals. Shady. And it impacts private property rights. Not stupid of me, very American.

  6. Todd,
A more common sense approach to the issue would be looking at global, national, and state populations to understand who were really infringed upon with growing populations. The places like San Jose, SF, and LA were flooded with population surges and many of the Californians who grew up in the orchards and open spaces of the areas already mentioned wanted to finish their lives in a similar setting, Nevada County.

As you have states many times on your position of property taxes, the population numbers of Nevada County hasn't changed all that much. The demographics are what has changed, which makes the county purple as Jeff Pelline states.

When you were born there were around
    Globally- 2.5 billion
    US - 175 million
    CA - 10 million

    1970
    Globally - 4 billion
    US - 203 million
    CA - 20 million

    1990
    Globally - 5.5 billion
    US - 248 million
    CA - 30 million

    Today
    Globally - 7 billion
    US- 308 million
    CA - 38 million

The best way of controlling the world population along with a slew of other major issues is the education and empowerment of women.

I figured you would like that position. Damn critical thinking getting in the way again.

    1. You are right BenE, your critical thinking skills are lacking so we agree. You and I agree there are a lot of humans on the planet. One out of four are Chinese one out of five are Indians from India. I would say you should travel to their countries and eductae their women. America and Europe seem to have leveled off.

  7. Todd,
I guess you missed the California and United States population figures. You also missed the point as usual. Since you were born the US has added 100 million and CA has added 28 million people.

    1. You are the one that has the problem of those moving into Nevada County not me. The explosion of population in California has created a huge shift in residents all over California and the west of the US.

    2. Go back and answer my points about the issue and then I will consider yours. You always fail to answer but demand we do. That is a position of hubris that doesn;t wear well. I have no problems you are aware of.

Why have you refused to travel to China and India to preach contraception and abortion to them? they have 1/3 of the humans on the planet.

      Delete
    3. There is nothing to answer, you have your opinion and stated it. I picked the part I found offensive and gave you a different way of looking at the over population, which in turn has resulted in many people from the cities retiring in Nevada County. I gave a macro solution to the issue and you then told me to go to China and India to educate the women. I chose to ignore the dumb response.

      Delete
    4. I knew that would be your response. I tire of you libs never answering. I have concluded it is because you can't.

  8. Ben,
I think his disconnect is due to that very narrow view of the world. Kinda like a Bill O'Reilly history book. He defines "local" residents of Nevada County through the shortest of time frames within the American experience, much less the North American experience. Forget about historical world human immigration patterns.
The community is the sum of what its current residents desire today, not what a long-time resident pines for. There are no extra credits given to your views and opinions because you've lived here longer than someone else.

Change is good. And besides- its inevitable. In fact, its already happened. You cannot relive the past.

  9. Hey, and Todd, whats the problem with San Jose? Seems you don't like the cities of the Bay, ha?...you know, those Silicon type places that led the American economic boom of the 80s and 90s? The great American success stories and such. Very much a capitalist land. And you hinted at the social problems there- which ones might those be that we don't have here? Do tell. :) Or was the rant just your way of flying your Confederate flag?

    1. Don't fly a confederate flag but your commie flag is showing again. Hammer and sickle.

San Jose is a mess and if you would pay attention you would know that. The silicon valley had a huge bust in 1999 and many people went BK. Big city folks from there moved here with their attitudes. Too bad, it appears you may be one f them eh?

      Delete
    2. Oh I see..THEIR attitudes. As opposed to your very angry, very resentful and provincial one. Gotcha. Perhaps YOU should be the one grateful for those nasty folks who moved here and bought your houses, and built your nest-egg. Funny how that works, ha? Free market economics in a mobile society. Exactly what any intelligent Repub would want.

Funny how housing prices down there in my old stomping grounds hardly moved during the recession- for being such an economic basketcase? :)

You realize your fourth amendment rights are being trampled by TSA? All in the name of profit over people. The reason of security is a propaganda tool by those who are controlled by big money special interests. Here is a shock, Michael Chertoff former HSA is the person who pushed the cancer scanners and he actually has financial interest in the same companies that manufacture the scanners. We are at the mercy of crony capitalism or corporatism.

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2010-11-22-scanner-lobby_N.htm
"The companies with multimillion-dollar contracts to supply American airports with body-scanning machines more than doubled their spending on lobbying in the past five years and hired several high-profile former government officials to advance their causes in Washington, government records show."

  15. My fiance' and I visited Nevada City for the first time on Saturday. We love the gold country (I lived up in Amador for a number of years) and we always enjoy our day trip adventures to various little towns to photograph and learn about local history. We were saddened, sickened and just plain disappointed to see this beautiful gem of a town wasted away to nothing because of the people inhabiting it. I literally felt a bad vibe come over me as we drove into town and it didn't go away until we left. Like a bad dark cloud of negative energy looming over Nevada City c/o the transplants from Berkeley. It breaks my heart that your beautiful town has been hijacked by outsiders and ruined, too. One thing is for sure, we won't be visiting Nevada City anytime soon....my question is though, what will they do if the county becomes part of the newly proposed State of Jefferson? Do you think they will crawl back under the rocks they came from, or will they fight it all the way? This was a great post by the way, it confirmed a suspicion both my fiance and I had the moment we stepped foot in Nevada City. ---
