India, a country of well over a billion people, rarely uses the death penalty the last time being in 2004 for a child murderer. The murder of Indira Gandhi's son, Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 was a terrible shock to the Indian people who are viewed by many to be a fairly pacific people. HERE is the article.
Though named Gandhi, Rajiv and his mother were not related by blood or marriage to the famous, Mahatma Gandhi. He was the grandson of Nehru, India's first Prime Minister after the gaining of independence from Great Britain after WW2. Like his mother, Rajiv was assassinated by terrorists. She in 1984 and he in 1991.
The Tamil Tigers claimed the credit for killing Rajiv but later issued a "regret" in 2006 which was done to try and gain a reprieve for the three convicted men . They did the planning and a suicide bomber did the deed. It appears the strategy of finding someone to blow themselves to smithereens is not just one used by Islamic terrorists. So a country that practices a peaceful religion, Hindi, will get its revenge for the murder of a man who had a vision and a plan to improve his country. There are times when the ultimate penalty must be enforced.
