Saying Adios to a Friend

Jeff Ackerman and Me at Kane's tonight.
Today at 4pm a whole bunch of people started trickling in to Kane's Restaurant to say their goodbyes to Jeff Ackerman.  This all came about real quick.  I was thinking I should try and do something for Jeff since he was leaving to take over a paper in Oregon and I would probably not see him again.  We are all 62 and who knows what the fure may bring?

Well a couple of days ago I called Keioni Allen the owner of Sierra Foothills Constructyion and also  an old friend of Jeff's.  I mentioned maybe we could take Jeff out for a drink or maybe call other folks and do a little sendoff.  Keoni said why not meet at Kane's and in the meantime contact folks and tell them to meet us there if they want to.  So Keoni talked to Jeff and he would meet us there.  I did a blast email to mutual friends and so did Keoni.  We showed up at four along with Mike Sherman, Bill Drown and Tim Callaway.  It was slow for a while but soon enough a whole lot of people arrived after five o'clock.

I saw people of all stripes come and chat with Jeff and it was a real nice time at Kane's/  We gave evertone a champagne glass of bubbly and after a nice little personal praise from Keoni we all raised our glasses in a toast to Jeff.  Many of us who have respected Jeff for all he has done in the county over the years were a bit nostalgic and we were sad to see him leaving.  Jeff was a fairminded publisher/editor and his public service was way beyond the call of duty.  One thing I really liked about his management of the paper was his humor when writing his editorials.  He also had to deal with a small hardcore group of liberal loudmouths who never gave him a break.  But Jeff bought ink by the barrell as they say and the liberals had met their match.

George Rebane, Greg Goodknight (with a son in Harvard no less) and Stan Meckler were there.  Nancy Garcia and her hubby came to say goodby too.  I bet a hundred people came through before I left and even Doug LaMalfa came and gave Jeff a certificate of appreciation.  All this in a day and a half!  Thanks Keoni and all the rest of you folks who have a lot of class for coming to say adios to a man with a lot class.  We will all miss him.

  1. Sorry we missed the goodbye party we were on a trip to Bend. I see his Purpleness had a few nasty parting words on his blog. Looking forward to working with the new Publisher, should make for an interesting summer and fall, especially if he is a global warmer like Jeff.

  2. Hey Russ, traveling is fun and I am glad you get to do some. I read the screed by the portly purple man and got a belly laugh. He sure is a bitter clinger. Many of the Union employees came by to say goodbye as well. Funny, purple guy said in his screed on the elections in Grass Valley that JeffA was supporter of the AGW opponents. Oh well, that explains the lack of veracity in the purple articles. You just can't make this stuff up.

Regarding elections, it was JeffA that decided not to endorse in the Union. Before that it was a common practice for the paper to pick people. I have a hard time understanding how Mr. Purple claims a bias by JeffA. He is simply jealous I guess. Jeff had many thousands of people reading his work (and friends) while it appears Mr. purple has five or six.

We will all miss Jeff Ackerman because he was fair and allowed anyone, no matter how mainstream or not, to write opinions for the people in the county to read. That is the true test of a community paper. The purple blog is strictly a leftwingnut dumping ground. Except maybe for Brad. Hell even Stoos left!
