Cheryl Cook, another liberal whiner gets her column. Updated February 11, 2015

I have been a subscriber all my adult life of our local Union Newspaper.  I think it is very important to support a local paper.  In my experience I have seen the best and the worst running the paper and I have been the recipient of both in the articles and on the Editorial page.  Most of the articles were critical and yes, in the beginning I felt they were picking on me because I was politically different.  Over time though I grew up, got mature and took my medicine.  But in the days I was a County Supervisor, I was pilloried often by a hostile Editor.  Now we see a different animal complaining here.

Today the Union ran a opinion piece by a disgruntled liberal woman named Cheryl Cook.  She had a litany of complaints about the paper and the community.  I read it thoroughly and absorbed her hatred and bitterness towards the community and "conservatives".  I concluded there is no help available for this woman.  HERE is the opinion piece.

This was the telling comment to me from Cook's diatribe against the good citizens of Nevada County.

"Look around. Ask yourself why people of color do not make their home here. Where is the ethnic diversity that is reflected in California’s cosmopolitan population? Where is the spirit of inclusion?"

Now I don't have a clue about what color or ethnicity Cook is.  But that quote tells me she is a true died in the wool leftwinger.  If she is a white woman, then why move here and surround yourself with a lot of white people?  If  she moved here from a urban area that has a lot of people that are not white, doesn't her leaving diminish the diversity there?  My goodness, what a load of crap this woman is spreading.

People of any background and color can move anywhere they want in America.  Nevada County is no different.  Cook could move to Truckee I suppose.  There are more "Latinos" there according to the census.  If that is her gig I say prove to us your words are not crap.  I know a lot of people here.  I never run into anyone who disparages others for being a different color and ethnicity.  I imagine that may only occur in the conversations these liberals like Cook conjure up in their little "policy" group think meetings.

Her hatred for  Republicans and conservatives is very troubling.  In Nevada County the left has been trying to take over our elected offices for many years.  When four lefties were elected to the Board of Supervisors years ago, they started a move through the Democrat Party here to elect a majority on the city councils and N.I.D.  Luckily the voters saw through this and kept common sense people on the elected boards.  Well, except for Nevada City.

What fascinates me abut the Cook's and Firth's are their assumptions about the people they chose to come live with.  The R's and Conservatives here are all very fine people.  They are inclusive and friendly.  What they don't like is people coming to disrupt their lives.  The liberals like Cook and Firth have an innate hate for people on the right so they naturally feel compelled to gain a position to lord over them through elections.  Well we see the results.  The people don't want them.

Cook was on the Editorial Board of the Union and was awarded a prime spot to disseminate her claptrap in the paper.  Yet, she could not even accept that apparently.  She quit and took her football home.  What this shows me is that she and Firth and their ilk cannot accept the fact their policies and ideas are not welcome in our elected positions here.  So, like spoiled little children these liberals whine and cry and call others names.  Wah wah wah!  I suggest that Cook rethink why she moved to a place she now apparently does not care for.  Perhaps a better fit is Oakland or San Francisco?

Regardless, I am glad that people like Firth and Cook get their ideas on the Union's Editorial page if only to show the rational and common sense people of Nevada County the difference between a liberal and a conservative.

UPDATED February 11, 2015

OK, it looks like Cook has doubled down with her whining in today's Union Letters.  HERE is the screed.

My goodness, the woman is unable to discern political criticism and personal attacks so she comes across as a muddled intellect at best.  She complains that someone spit on her or her car because she had an Obama bumper sticker on it.  She should have filed a police report but apparently did not.  That would be assault.  But with all her rants about the local community not be so welcoming to her, perhaps she made some political enemies?  Hell, my car was keyed and my tires flattened and my brake fluid drained 30 years ago.  I have no idea who did it and I have no idea what political party, if any, they belonged too.

I assume since Cook is complaining about the bumper sticker that she knows the person and the political party they belong too?  If not, then why try and tarnish the opposition?  Cook says this,

" I have liberal, moderate, and conservative friends. But my experience here is that people fear speaking above that whisper because of the consequences they will suffer."

Say what?  Everyone I know in our community are the defenders of speech.  They want more speech not less and I have ever met a person from the right in our community that did anything untoward towards an avowed liberal after they spoke out.  Just go to a Nevada City Council meeting on any issue.  You will hear the lefts opinions which I am sure you probably agree with.  You would be right at home with the liberals of the area.

So once again we all get to read the woes of a liberal/democrat who feels picked on.  Toughen up, we have to listen to your screeds in the local paper you so despise.  If they were as biased as you say why then would they publish you, Ron Lowe and Eubanks among many?

I would encourage Ms. Cook to find the article by Valentina Parkman that was published in The Union a couple of weeks ago, read it carefully, and spend some quality introspective time asking if you see yourself and your outlook on life in Nevada County more like Ms. Parkman or Jim Firth. She sounds an awful lot like the message that Firth wears around like a crown of thorns. "OMG, I moved to a small town full of conservatives! I tried to tell them how wrong their thinking is, and no one listens to me!" There are lots of liberals in Nevada County, many of them in elected positions. Their ability to interact well with both liberals and conservatives is evidenced by the fact that some have been reelected numerous times. It is painfully obvious that the real problem with Ms. Cook is her attitude and tolerance for people who do not see the world the same way she does. It would seem she has a simple choice. Seek out those who do think like her and like their lives in Nevada County. Learn from them some tolerance and basic personal interaction skills, or admit that she made a mistake in moving to a small town with more conservatives than she can tolerate. Then simply relocate to someplace more to her liking. Demanding that everyone in her new hometown change to suit her liking is childish and unbecoming.

  2. Like Ms. Parkman, I enjoy many wonderful friends in the area, most of them Conservatives. I have volunteered my hours to different community groups. I have voted both Republican and Democrat. I enjoy diversity in all things: Religion, Ethnicity, Politics. Unlike Ms Parkman, I have shared my political outlook and candidate of choice in the form of a bumper sticker, in social gatherings when asked, and in Editorials
from time to time. She has not.
I have attempted to create a balance in the political discussion here. I have no hatred for anyone. But have certainly been on the receiving end of it.
Your assumptions are way off course. It is the attitude and intolerance of those Conservatives who spit at cars, harrass drivers, and tear off bumper stickers from cars other than their own that are in question. But nice try turning things around.

Anon, 1:45. You posted some reasonable thoughts, but I have a couple of questions of you. Why have you concluded that Ms Parkman does not share her political outlook in social gatherings, or have a bumper sticker on her car? That was not evident from her article, and seems like a big leap that you are making for some reason. Are you attempting to lessen the value of her opinion because you perceive her to be less outspoken than you are?
It is great that you have no hatred for anyone, and horrible that you have experienced it yourself. It appears you have experienced hatred from conservatives, and have branded all conservatives negatively. Would it not be more appropriate to direct our scorn at the individuals who are guilty of bad behavior rather than an entire class of people, 50% of our fellow countrymen. There are bad apples of all kinds around us, but not every apple is bad. It is inexcusable to spit at someone because you disagree with them. It is also inappropriate to carry bias against someone you have never met simply because of they way they choose to vote. What do you think?

  5. Ms Parkman did not refer to any political affiliation and appeared to base her being welcomed into the community on willingness to volunteer, promote friendships, and reaching out to others in good faith. I have done the same….with people of all political leanings.
Your therapeutic advice perhaps should be geared toward Juvinall et al who appear to "absorb" hatred in one's writings when it just may be a result of a natural regurgitation.

  7. Very good, sensible article Todd. Amazing Ms. Cook would make such claims. She was a member on the Union's Board. The majority on the Board are considered progressive (liberal?) reflecting the many opinions of the same persuasion. Why call nice people bad names because they write different opinions based on their experience and observations that differ. The varity is educational. Isn't that what "liberal" is supposed to be about? Or did someone change the meaning? The variety of opinions give us a bigger picture of who and what we're voting for. BMW

  10. The FUE sure does like to wrote about himself, how wonderful he thinks he is and he sure likes to try and name drop to look important and liked. Best example is his recent self serving post about the Nevada City Chamber event at the Foundry.

What the FUE is clueless of is how folks that attended and had to spend time around him at the event really feel about him. I have talked to a number of folks that attended the Chamber event and had to suffer his attempts to be warm and fuzzy with them. All had the same thing to say about the FUE and none of it was good. Folks feel slimed an encounter with the FUE, they said they suffered through and then laughed like crazy after they get clear of him. The FUE thinks he is liked by the very folks that sigh relief and laugh behind his back when he walks away. The FUE is clueless about how folks really view him, his massive, narcissistic ego blocks his view of the sad reality.

The FUE really is the most despised, laughed at man in Nevada County.

So Pelline hates the Union newspaper and says he will not subscribe because it's so bad, but he reads it, steals its content to posts and blogs rants about The Union most every day. Pelline's favorite thing to do is rant about any typo or miswording The Union makes.

But the Pelline needs to keep his own glass house in order. How long before the big Pee corrects this latest mistake he made while ranting about The Union?

  13. Below is a letter from The Union today, it's from lefty Pinky Zalkin. Zalkin is a well known local lefty, a lover of anything Jim Firth or Terry L:amphier spew out.

In her letter Zalkin attacks the move "American Sniper" and insults American hero Chris Kyle.

Here's Zilkin;s letter in The Union so others can see how screwed up and lost the local lefty nut jobs are:

"I find it appalling that people are flocking by the hundreds to see American Sniper while Selma has an audience of 20-30 people! It appears that America, which seems to be immune to and yet hungers to see violence, would rather see a movie, though well made, about a man whose claim to fame is that he holds the record for shooting more people than any other soldier.

Isn’t it more important that we go to see a movie about the struggles and success of Martin Luther King Jr. and all the men, women and children who died so that millions would have the right to vote?

I think we can learn a lot more about sacrifice and be inspired to do good works by going to see Selma. I suggest everyone, particularly young people, go to see what the real heroes in America accomplished.

"Here is a prayer from Michael Moore. I picked this out specifically for our hard right wingers..."

"... we ask that You inflict every member of the House of Representatives with horrible, incurable cancers of the brain, penis, and hand (though not necessarily in that order). We ask, Our Loving Father, that every senator from the South be rendered addicted to drugs and find himself locked away for life. We beseech You to make the children of every senator in the Mountain Time Zone gay–really gay. Put the children of senators from the East in a wheelchair and the children of senators from the West in a public school..."

Ben Emery is a very twisted person, but funny how he claims to be a middle of the road guy, just like the FUE claims. Also notice the growing number of nasty posts with threats of violence against "the local right" the FUE is allowing on his blog of hate.

  21. Is it possible for Pelline to be a bigger, one sided, double standard hypocrite?

Pelline posted another childish, obsessed rant against The Union newspaper. This time about The Union running an ad for an Auburn business:

    "Shop Local?"

“Shop local” reads an ad in our community newspaper this morning, referring to Don Adams Antenna Satellite Services. But right below this ad is another bigger ad: for McCaulou’s department store — across the county line, in Auburn".

But since we know Pelline reads this blog every 15 minutes maybe he can write about the lefty lib double stand by one of the key leaders of the western Nevada County "Be local, Buy Local" campaign that shops down the hill at evil Costco.

Will Pelline cover this? I bet not. Pelline claims he's Mr. "middle of the road" and balanced, what a crock! So here's one for Pelline to look into, verify and cover. Maybe he should check it out and even talk to the lefty business owner about shopping at Costco while at the same time preaching "Be local, Buy Local" and don't shop at evil corporate businesses.

Seems our local Flour Garden Bakery owner that preaches and leads the "Be Local, Buy Local" effort and anti corporate business mantra is the biggest lefty hypocrite around. You see, Flour Garden Bakery uses a lot of "Kirkland" products, purchased at the Roseville Costco no less!

Check out the brand of artificial sweeteners Flour Garden Bakery has, one is yellow packets that have "Kirkland" printed on them. Look in the back bakery production area of the Neal Street Flour Garden Bakery and one sees cases of "Kirkland" maple syrup. I wonder what other things Flour Garden buys from the evil big box Costco, what about TP and paper towels? Are these items not available locally?

The lefty's are a big bunch of hypocrites that want to control every part of our lives. Do as I demand, not as I do! Pelline won't cover this because he's anything but fair, balance or middle of the road as he claims.

    Hypocrites!

    http://www.chicoer.com/general-news/20150205/wildflower-students-linked-to-graffiti-in-bidwell-park

Chico: Recent graffiti in Bidwell Park was at the hands of students from a Chico charter school as part of a lesson on civic engagement and activism. Seventh- and eighth-graders at Wildflower Open Classroom on Cohasset Road have been involved with an anti-fracking campaign and are among those planning to take part in a rally in Oakland on Saturday. On Monday, students and some staff members vandalized parts of lower park with anti-fracking messages and advertisements for the weekend rally.

School site director Tom Hicks said Thursday that the vandalism was an unfortunate error in judgment related to the middle school students’ studies in civic engagement and activism. Earlier in the year, they selected fracking as a topic and became engaged with the issue. After research into ways to put their ideas in motion, students decided to use sidewalk chalk and stencils to get their message out, including making their own biodegradable chalk. The activity in the park took place after school Monday with students and staff.

“Unfortunately there was some miscommunication and then error in judgment on our behalf by doing this in the park,” Hicks said. “At this point we are working with the parks department to rectify the situation and making every effort to turn this into a learning experience for everybody involved.” Aside from this incident, Hicks said he has been extremely proud of the students and teachers in their embrace of activism and the leadership the youth have shown in carrying out their project. City parks and natural resource manager Dan Efseaff said he could not release many details because the city is still investigating and has not determined a final course of action.

“Our process usually is to get a report, do our due diligence and come up with information and facts,” he said. “All our staff time that’s necessary to repair, clean or get rid of graffiti or vandalism is documented and that potentially becomes billable.” People responsible for graffiti or vandalism can be charged with an infraction, misdemeanor or felony based on the nature of the crime. The city is collecting information and will be acting appropriately, Efseaff said. The vandalism included a message of “Don’t frack CA” painted on a fallen tree and dozens of stenciled images painted on the asphalt roadway, starting near One-Mile Recreation Area and looping to the bridge near Highway 99. The images were footprints promoting the March for our Water, Health, Climate.

“It wasn’t very effective because they went in the night before, it was reported to us in the morning, and a crew responded by 8:30 (a.m.),” Efseaff said. “By 9 a.m., all of the message part of it was obliterated.” The markings were made with a spray marking chalk, and while it’s not considered permanent, it still requires removal with a pressure washer, he said. Even after rainstorms, it doesn’t go away. It could be there for weeks after application,” Efseaff said. “We can’t have any markings on city property. It’s all in the same category. It’s still defacing city property and has to be cleaned up.”

On the students’ Facebook page, they explain they have decided to take a stand against fracking. They are helping Frack-Free Butte County organize a bus to the March for Real Climate Leadership and raise awareness through a community art project and outreach. The March for Real Climate Leadership is expected to attract thousands of people to Oakland, where participants will call on Gov. Jerry Brown to ban fracking and push for 100 percent renewable energy. A bus of local people is leaving from Butte College at 7 a.m.

  33. Teaching children to vandalize a public park, spray paint a protest message on a tree, included students and their teachers the led this vandalism field trip "as part of a lesson on civic engagement and activism" to protest fracking.

So after being caught the school director Tom Hicks says "the vandalism was an unfortunate error in judgment... unfortunately there was some miscommunication and then error in judgment on our behalf by doing this in the park”.

What a total load of BS from the school director. Those school staff members that led this vandalism "field trip" should be fired on the spot vs. lame excuses by the school director. Vandalism is a part of the lefty's "civic engagement and activism" methods and they are teaching it to children at the school.

Our tax dollars at work at a charter school. I wonder if this is part of Common Core.

  34. The clueless lib school director sure has the real issue wrong. The school director's response to the vandalism field trip that "unfortunately there was some miscommunication and then error in judgment on our behalf by doing this in the park”.

Really, the problem is the location the teachers chose to vandalize in protest? Where should the teachers have taken the kids to vandalize, someone's private property? The school's director says it was "miscommunication". Talk about not taking responsibility of the school's actions.

  35. Political activism (for the left) has been one way to get good grades in certain college classes for years. Evidently it's now part of grade school. Anti plastic grocery bags is one example of kids making new regulations via those with the same limited mentality. You know where it's coming from because they scream loudly about how terrible it is to use kids for anything regarding "right" like the Constitution. BMW
