What is a "good ol' boy" asks Hemig of the Union today?

The Union Publisher Jim Hemig, a recent arrival to this area has asked that question and then decided to research it.  HERE is the column.  He started off with Lowell Robinson, the native born man who grew up on a ranch here in Nevada County.  He started with the right man.  In the local loony left corner of our county, for instance in Jeff Pelline's brain, Robinson must be "bad" because of the fortune of his birth and his success in business.

Of course the recent liberal arrivals like Pelline and his apparent best friend Jim Firth, a democrat activist,  think there is a derogatory meaning to the term. They use it as a pejorative.  I use it as a honorable title.  I liked Keoni Allen's response to their view.  Use the converse, "bad, young, girl"!  Too funny.  Then Hemig told us the Grass Valley City Council was fairly evenly split over the last few elections with left and right, newcomers and older timers residents.  Firth is mad because so far he has run twice for City Council and was resounding rejected by the voters.  I guess he is a bitter, poor loser.  Pelline apparently has never tried to run and he too was rejected by the Union as its Editor?  He comes across to all of us  as bitter and vengeful. Especially towards "good ol' boys".

So what about that view that a "good ol' boy" is something to avoid?  First, how does a person like Lowell Robinson become something bad to these liberal loons?  He used to be the second largest privet employer here after Grass Valley Group (where are they now?).  But the business of tree falling was squashed by the "new young boys/girls" here.  They sue and contest every timber harvest, burn salvage etc.and convinced the leftwing US Forest Service to pretty much quash harvesting in the national forests (read spotted owl and their management plan).  So his employee numbers went way down and were replaced by teet sucking eco non profits that bring nothing but grief to the county, state and country.  Our County has the highest per capita number of non-profits except for Washington DC I am told.

So Lowell Robinson, who supplied many jobs through his risk taking and who supplied millions in wages to the community was squished out of his profession (at least through historical average) and it was done by the newcomers.  He still gives back in spades to the county and its people though.  What do all these eco non-profits give back?  Zip, zero, nada. What does Pelline give to the community?  What does Firth give to the community?

But let me return to the term.  I was born and raised here as my mom and dad came here in 1945 after the war ended.  By that luck I am considered a "good ol' boy" and now that I am 64, the critics on the left call us "old white men, good ol' boys".  Too funny.  For me, I was never political until the recently arrived liberals tried to shut down the county in 1978.  They came, they saw, and they almost conquered in 1978.  I became active out of survival.  These newcomers though, over time, have wrecked the county.  They have destroyed the jobs, good paying ones, and replaced them with some low pay service and tourist type jobs.

Once a man could make enough here to raise his family and have a home and some  money left over for other things.  We had a traditional family values county.  After the liberals got here we see young people fleeing to greener job pastures.  We see people living three or four to a home because rents are so high.  No new homes here, can't have that.  Can't have a say in your own home to build.  But hey, the liberals are happy.  The population has increased about 10,000 people in twenty plus years!  Mostly old people as the young families have fled (check school enrollment numbers).  So we have a bunch of lowly paid service people commuting up from low cost Yuba County and taking care of the old fart liberals.  What a victory for the left eh?

The "good ol' boys" over the years did their best to get the county some economy other than old folks homes and K-Mart but these newcomers would have none of it.  So in my opinion the "bad ol' boys/girls" won the war.  Now a simple business of almost any kind is wrecked by these people from being born.  A well paid mining operation is trashed and delayed and forced to go away.  The laws passed by these liberals at all levels of government have wrecked the County, the State and the country.  I would say the "good ol' boys" have been relegated to the dustbin.  The left has destroyed the doers and replaced them with the Pelline's and Firths.  God help us.

  1. Ah simplicity. Except for a look at surrounding counties to our West. Yuba, Sutter and Colusa counties are as Red Republican as any in the state, yet have 3 of the 5 worst economies of counties in CA. Nevada County's economy is middle of the pack in CA, yet the pure Red counties are some of the worst. Man, maybe simplistic arguments aren't so simple after all!

  3. Good post Todd. A "good old boy" is simply someone you know and like and trust. The list is different for everyone. The fact that Jim Firth wants to put an end to this speaks volumes about Jim Firth, and what his tenure would be like if elected to anything, ever. The voters of Grass Valley need to understand who he is, and make sure he is not elected. Ever.

  4. I'm just back from my wonderful trip to Italy and I'm not happy with you. I'm a bit tired from taking photos and blogging about the shaved truffle plates at the restaurants I dined at to deal with you good old boys right now. You seem to forget it's all about me, that I'm the center of the universe. Since I moved to Nevada County it's been difficult to get all of you to understand my true importance. I have tried to inform and reform all you uneducated hicks, but it's not working. All you good old boys that belong to The Rotary and other good old boy groups need to be exposed and run out of town because you do nothing but try to control everything. You do nothing to help the community, you are all takers that only want to profit from exploiting the poor. You even have food booths at Treat Street at the county fair to raise good old boy money to increase your control. Selling corn dogs and root beer floats to support your good old boy control must be stopped, you are all takers. I'm the FUE and I have spoken!

  5. Isn't it interesting how everyone wants to be ME! ME, ME, ME, ME, ME. I am the TRUE FUE! And yes, I am tired. And bloated! And my cholesterol is at 428, but man I LOVE THAT PASTA. And I love telling all you hicks how cool I am. Did I tell you I have a boat? LOL!

  6. And yes, I do support my friend Jim Firth, the Former Union Organizer, The FUO, from San Francisco. He is going to help me stamp out all you good old boys! Power to the Bad New Boys! I like that! Soon we will control everything, and you will have to ask us to do anything. And we will give raises to everyone at City Hall, and increase their pension plans, and soon Grass Valley will be just like...Detroit! LOL!

  7. Yes, you got me good old boys, I am the FOU from San Francisco and proud of it! I'm here to repost my latest comment from my buddy Jeff's blog in the hope that all you good old boys wake up and listen to me! Here's my post, try to understand what I'm saying if you can.

"Welcome home Jeff. My campaign for Grass Valley City Council will begin soon. I do appreciate that you wouldn’t have advised me to use the language I selected in the July 15th article in The Union. However, I firmly believe that us regular citizens, not business owners, or the Contractor’s Association or the Chamber of Commerce need and deserve at least one, and frankly several voices on the City Council. One way to achieve this is by continually exposing how the current Council doesn’t represent us. It’s going to be an interesting 3 months".

    Jim Firth

Let me make it clear to all of you locals. As I stated in my post I'm a "regular citizen", not you folks. "us regular citizens" are not business owners, "us regular citizens" are not members of the Chamber, "us regular citizens" are not members of the Contractor's Association and "us regular citizens" are not elected members of the Grass Valley City Council.

If you voted for any of the Grass Valley City Council members you are not a "regular citizen" either, you are not one of "us regular citizens"!.

There are no " usregular citizens" in these groups and organizations and "us regular citizens" are not members of good old boy groups like The Rotary. If you are a member of these groups you are not a "regular citizen", you are not one of "us".

I'm the FUO from San Francisco, I moved to Nevada County to straight out all you good old boys. Now get with the program and join "us regular citizens"!

And just because I'm the Chairman of the Nevada County Democratic Party doesn't mean I have an agenda. Yes the Nevada County Democratic Party is a group with specific political goals and objectives, but we are all "regular citizens", none of us are members of the Chamber, Contractors Association, Grass Valley City Council and none of "us regular" citizens are business owners.

    1. Let me get this straight. "Us Regular Citizens" are essentially losers who don't have a job, don't own a business, don't work to better the community through service organizations such as Rotary (a group that pretty much wiped out polio worldwide). Got it. Great campaign platform, Firth. You will be a big hit among that demographic, so long as their felonies allow them to vote.

  8. Thanks for clarifying that Mr. Firth, that is very helpful. As someone who considers herself a "regular citizen", you just described, and alienated, myself and everyone I know. And, as someone who has never been involved in local politics, I will now become an active "regular citizen" and invest my time and money to help make sure that you are never elected and given a chance to drive a wedge between your vision of "regular citizen" and everyone else who lives here. You are not only rude, you are arrogant and completely disengaged from the community you have moved into. You are not the kind of regular citizen that will ever be embraced by the good people of Grass Valley!

  9. Jim Firth, I voted for all of the current City Council members, and happen to think that Howard Levine is one of the finest, most dedicated to his community, people in the world. Glad to know that Howard and I are bad people in your eyes. Can't wait to vote for anyone but you in November.

  10. OMG! Does this Firth guy really think this attitude about the residents of GV will help him get elected?

  11. All I know is that everything you freaks who think of yourselves as leaders in the community or in control in some way have been doing has not been working.

For you to be proud of it or blame its failure on outside forces is merely an attempt to mask your miserable failure.

This County and its cities have been controlled by the 'good old boys' for the vast majority of the last 30 years and the condition of the County today is your fault. All you do is bitch about how bad things are without recognizing you had the power to change it.

Typical of both the Baby Boom and the Gen-X generations. Can't take any responsibility.

Time for some new blood cause the old blood is tired.

  12. So let's see here Firth. You move here to this "miserable, failing community", because...why? And now you are so smart and awesome you are going to make it dramatically better by...kicking out all the people who have been busting their ass to make it what it is for the past 68 years since the mines closed? And it is so unappealing that you came here just to save us from ourselves because you are smart and we aren't? You are an arrogant ahole and Grass Valley has a long and rich history of flushing aholes like you down our 150 year old sewer system. The condition of the County and Grass Valley is just fine, and if you are unhappy here you should go back to San Francisco. The only thing wrong with Nevada County is the people like you who move here and realize they wish they hadn't and try to turn us into something we aren't.

    1. Jeff Pelline (Mr. Middle of the Road) is supporting the most partisan and extreme liberal Democrat in Nevada County. While to those who actually read what Pelline writes without drinking the kool-aid it is not surprising, it appears that actively supporting Firth is not very "purple" of him...LOL:

      Delete
    2. Well we know Pelline is a hypocrite and totally mislabels himself politically. First is a usurper wannabee and many in Grass Valley are determined he will be defeated if he runs. Firth is a leftwing union activist with no respect for the people he says he wants to govern.

  13. Well, all you losers and intellectual wannabes. I see you are frightened of my best buddy, Jim Firth the FUO! Just read above to see what Jim will do to you and your pathetic little cul-de-sac of a community. Read it and and weep. The days of the good old boys are over. The dawn of the Bad New Boys is here! We are here, and we are rich with cash extorted from working people through their Union Dues. We are going to take the workers money, and we are going to take over your town! LOL! We are going to stamp out everyone who voted for any current City Council member. We are going to stamp out every contractor, every business owner, every Chamber Member, every Rotary member. We are going to stamp out everyone who lives in this pathetic little town! Don't say I didn't warn you! Death to everyone who loves Grass Valley. Cheers to the Former Union Organizer! Jim Firth will own you soon, and he will appoint me Supreme Immenseness, and we will change everything! Down with business, up with workers! Free pasta for everyone! LOL!

  14. I was actually going to post this on the former Union editor's blog, but common sense got the better of me. I wholeheartedly support Dan, Lisa, Jan, Jason and Howard in Grass Valley. The fact of the matter is that Grass Valley politics is about the betterment of the city and not partisan games played by Pelline and Firth. Since 1998, Grass Valley has completely and utterly overtaked Nevada City in quality and atmosphere. The contrast over past 16 years is stark. BTW does 16 years make me and old timer? Adding a partisan hack like Firth to the council will have longlasting negative impacts on the council and the city. Firth works almost exclusively with the Democrat party...who else? Under Firth's leadership, the Democrats locally have been soundly rejected and frankly out worked by their adversaries. Stay with the Democrat party Mr. Firth...we conservatives need you there.

    1. Barry, that is correct. Don't forget those ol' boys Gerard Tassone and Patty Ingram either. They worked hard to make Grass Valley a great working town. Pelline is simply a big mouth and he now has a third butt cheek in another big mouth, Firth. Remember it was the democrat party local hacks who started using their Central Committee to endorse, not the Republicans. And we see that they have alienated many locals of both stripes with their acid campaigning.

  15. I wanted to make sure you all read my latest post on the FUE's blog. I'm proud to be the FUO, I'm proud to have been the Chief of Staff for Leland Yee while living in San Francisco. In fact being the right hand man of Leland Yee prepared me for public office, I learned from the best!

Here's part of what I posted on the FUE's blog, my entire post is on the FUE's blog:

    http://sierrafoothillsreport.com/2014/08/03/the-good-old-boys-caregivers-are-joining-unions-imagine-that/#comment-97309

"My additional work as Chief of Staff (Leland Yee) to a now discredited politician and former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors provided me with a working knowledge of the legislative process.", Jim Fitrth.

In case you need a recap about my mentor Leland Yee I'll now provide a little history. I much enjoyed being Leland's right hand man, as his Chief of Staff I learned so much from Leland!

Leland Yee is a suspended Democratic California State Senator for District 8, which represents a large portion of east central California. Before redistricting in 2011, Yee represented District 8 in San Francisco. Prior to becoming state senator, Yee was a California State Assemblyman, Supervisor of San Francisco's Sunset District, and was a member and President of the San Francisco School Board. In 2004 Yee became the first Asian American to be appointed Speaker pro Tempore, making him the second highest ranking Democrat of the California State Assembly. He was an award-winning gun control advocate.

Yee was arrested by the FBI on March 26, 2014 on charges related to public corruption and gun trafficking, specifically buying automatic firearms and shoulder-launched missiles from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, an Islamist extremist group located in the southern Philippines and attempting to re-sell those weapons to an undercover FBI agent, as well as accepting a $10,000 bribe from an undercover agent in exchange for placing a call to the California Department of Public Health regarding a contract at the organization. In response to the gun running and other criminal charges against him, the California State Senate suspended Yee as a Senator on March 28, 2014.

So in closing let me again say, for the record that "My additional work as Chief of Staff (for Leland Yee)... provided me with a working knowledge of the legislative process."

      It's schadentacular!

  16. I thought it had to be a joke, so I checked the FUE's blog. It's true, Firth did post:

"My additional work as Chief of Staff (Leland Yee) to a now discredited politician and former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors provided me with a working knowledge of the legislative process."

Jim Firth must be crazy to have posted this! Talk about political suicide, Firth has already lost the election due to his two recent posts on the FUE's blog. Firth is making it too easy. No need to make anything up about candidate Jim Firth, just need to show the community his posts on the FUE's blog.

First Jim Firth posted his "us regular citizens" insults, he insulted every member of the current City Council and said they need to be "exposed". Firth also insulted and attacked every "business owner", every member of the "Contractor’s Association" and every member of the "Chamber of Commerce" and said none of them are "regular citizen's".

I'm Jim Firth, candidate for Grass Valley City Council, vote for me, elect me to the Grass Valley City Council, I have a " working knowledge of the legislative process", gained while I worked as the Chief of Staff for Leland Yee in San Francisco.

I'm candidate Jim Firth, I was the Chief of Staff for Leland Lee in San Francisco and proud of it. I learned a lot from Leland Lee, Leland "provided me with a working knowledge of the legislative process." If you need to know how to take bribes or want to buy automatic firearms and shoulder-launched missiles from an Islamist extremist group located in the southern Philippines just give me a call.

Firth really should save his time, his union campaign money and community embarrassment by withdrawing from the Grass Valley City Council race.

Jim Firth, Leland Yee's former Chief of Staff, current Chair of the Nevada County Democratic Committee has no chance of being elected, what he will do is bring a lot of embarrassment to the good, real "regular citizens" of Grass Valley, himself and the Nevada County Democratic Committee.

  17. "Firth's first involvement in San Francisco politics came as a volunteer in the supervisorial campaign of Doris Ward...For those of you who do not remember Doris Ward, Ward was the San Francisco Assessor-Recorder whose office was raided by FBI agents in 2002 for allegedly awarding a $48,750 contract to her political consultant Claude Everhart as she was preparing to run for re-election to her $130,735-per-year post."

    1. Barry, you have it right. I re-read Firth's screed and he has it all backwards regarding the people and the motives of the locals. He says this on the FUE's blog

"It’s clear to me that there are people in our community who fear change. The status quo has served them very well for a long time. Why change if it’s working for you? The difficulty is that the status quo only works for a diminishing few. The majority of Nevada County residents, in my opinion, identify with a larger border – California. Nevada County is not reflective of California. That’s not to suggest that Nevada County will transform soon, it won’t. However, the children and grandchildren of the “old guard” will not embrace the same style of political conservatism their parents and grandparents espoused."

The people that want no change are his "progressives". We on the right, the people in business and most of the long timers wanted to put in infrastructure and zoning that would facilitate good long term opportunities for residents and businesses and jobs. His pals stopped it all and as we see the population has remained stagnant as has businesses and jobs for the last 25 years. We tried to make the county a diverse one regarding employment. His pals fought for huge "historical" zones in both cities which caused a "no-growth" persona. His pals stymie anyone trying to start a business that has land use as a part of it. Driving up costs and scaring off people buying as a residence or an investment.

So as usual Firth and his pal's have it all backwards and now he tries to run using "change" from the "status quo" that he and his buddies have foisted on the county is so disingenuous as to be ridiculous. My guess after the people see what a phony platform he has, they will wake up. He will get maybe Laurie Oberholtzer's (EIR Consultant to Wildwood Estates) vote (oops she has to move, sorry) and a few other leftwing liberal extremists such as he is. Pelline's guy, what a hoot!

      Delete
  18. Jim Firth is a generous person, In just two posts on Jeff Pelline's blog he has given the Grass Valley City Council election to anyone running against him. What the heck was Jim Firth thinking by posting these two rants?

Will Jeff Pelline comment on Fith's two posts and tell him he just lost the election?

Will the Nevada County Democratic Party ask Firth to resign from his Director position on the NCDP so they might save some face or say nothing and let these comments by Firth stand, thus shredding any credibility they have in the community?

The NCDP needs to take stock of these two insulting posts and ask Jim Firth to step down ASAP. Not only will Jim Firth lose again, but this time the NCDP will go down in flames with him if they fail to cut Firth loose.

  19. Whenever I hear the term "good old boy," I'm reminded of the theme song from that TV classic, "The Dukes of Hazzard" ("Just good old boys, never meaning no harm...") and wonder what locals I'd cast in the various roles. Two obvious ones are RL Crabb as the troubadour, and Jeff Pelline as Boss Hogg--aside from the physical resemblance, JP and JD blow smoke and sputter a lot. I'm sure your readers could come up with creative suggestions for the other roles.

On another issue, saying you worked in the San Francisco election office is analogous to saying you were Leland Yee's chief of staff. The election office has a well-deserved reputation for screwing things up on election day and then taking forever to count the votes--sort of like here.
