I saw the Channel 10 ABC local story on this last night. No interviews of locals and just a screen shot of the Senum page. They did read her words. NEVADA CITY (CBS13) – Outrage is mounting after a city councilwoman points the blame for the Dallas shootings at America’s police, now they want her to resign.
ReplyDelete“That vote was unanimous,” said Officer Tim Ewing with Nevada City Police Association.
City Councilwoman Reinette Senum posted:
“This was completely incited by America’s police force. They have obviously been given directives to go out there and kill.”
Ewing said the post is untrue and hurtful.
“You paint a picture that every police officer is corrupt and that were out looking to kill somebody is just completely unacceptable,” he said.
Officer Ewing read the post as Senum saying all police are corrupt, but the Councilwoman says that’s not it.
“Black lives lost, the lives of police officers lost is a tragedy. It’s not mutually exclusive to the fact that we need to have high standards with our police force. We lost a lot of those high standards and we want them back,” she said.
Outrage and support are twofold on Senum’s Facebook.
But Ewing said this is an inflammatory statement and they’re not paid to kill leading the police force to take a vote of no confidence, asking for her resignation.
“It’s not something that anybody wants to do and certainly there’s been no directive for us to go do such a thing,” he said.
Senum said she was talking about corruption, not necessarily Nevada City Police.
“The good police officers who are out there doing their job, I have the highest regard for them,” she said.
While the post was a blow to officers, Ewing said his team has also received some much needed support.
“I don’t even know how to say just how much we appreciate the support from the community we get and that’s why it is so hurtful for somebody that the community trusted to come here and make decisions for the city for this community to say the things that were said,” he said.
Several hours later Senum deleted the post

ReplyDelete"I would like to extend an apology first and foremost to the Nevada City Police Department whom I have the utmost respect for. I have attended many meetings with Chief Tim Foley and have had the privilege of working with him and his officers in the capacity of tending to the homeless, homeless camp cleanups, and city-wide cleanings. In no way did I mean to offend our highly regarded officers with my comments on Facebook.
I also apologize for using such a broad brush that our local officers felt they were included in my statement.
The intent was not to vilify our police force but to point out a well documented trend that is causing a public backlash towards the police. I have been pointing this out for years that ultimately any kind of violence begets violence.
Whether because of the lack of systemic changes or the continued acquittal of police officers charged with murder, many American citizens are feeling helpless towards this rising conflict. In 2014 and 2015 not one officer was convicted for murder when there were roughly 1,000 deadly shooting per year. This statistic is sending people into the streets to protest.
I think it also very important to clarify that immediately upon posting on my Facebook Nevada County Scooper, a satirical publication put out a fake article that grossly misrepresented what I posted. Most people still do not know this is a satirical piece -- shared throughout social media as real -- though I consider it more malicious and intentional misinterpretation of my post than anything
In this spoof it stated that I said the police ‘got what they deserved.’ Again, this was a drummed up story penned by an anonymous writer. This begs me to ask, who is this person and what is their motive?
Today, we need to insist that America’s law enforcement includes in their standards and tactics how to interact with members of the public.
We can have great sympathy for our police while holding them to high standards as well as the same laws that apply to the average citizen.
We need to ensure training includes race sensitivity, de-escalation tactics, when and how to make arrests, and how to approach the public on the streets and during traffic stops, as well as prosecute the offending officers.
I praise the Dallas police that was targeted and find it unfortunate that the department that was attacked had been making some of the greatest strides in progressive change and revising their training standards.
Ultimately, I hope that good can come from this and that a deep conversation ensues.

The dept. was at a PEACEFUL demonstration, where our citizens were peacefully expressing their opinions about events that have been occurring across the country. One mentally ill person took a position on top of a building and began shooting police officers. The officers were simply standing a post making sure that our citizens were safe. I feel sorry for the police officers in Nevada City. That their own council person could have so much contempt for the police. I don't care what happens to you. But I truly think that you owe the families of these murdered officers a huge apology. Please stay in California, Texans would not put up with a person like you with no heart or human compassion.

If Senum really cared about the city she would resign before Wednesday's meeting. If she really cared she would not be part of the law enforcement support resolution that will be sent to the City of Dallas Texas. Senum's name should not be on resolution as it would be another insult to the people of Dallas, the Dallas Police Department and the families of the dead and wounded Officers that gave their lives to protect people. Will Senum do the right thing?

I am sending out this letter for those who are interested and coming to speak at special city council meeting being held TONIGHT, 6:30PM at Nevada City City Hall. There will be a resolution passed in support of the local Nevada City and in support of the Dallas police…. this is in response to a Facebook post I made last Friday.
As you can imagine, at this point in time the city expects this to be a public lynching of me…. I will address the crowd in the beginning, but any support you can muster please show up at 6:30pm to voice your support! Also, do know that Hot Summers Nights so parking and getting to city will be a bit challenging.

Then the went to the story of Dallas burying their dead Officers. 90% of the input the City got from the public is Senum must go. Last night many long time and well know Nevada City folks told her to resign. The TV3 reporter covered how Senum skipped out of the post meeting interview she had promised them. They said the resolution would be going to Dallas Texas and it would be an insult to have her name on it. RS did not listen. Now the Dallas Mayor and Chief of Police will get a resolution supporting them with RS name and signature on it. Considering the headline in the Dallas news that RS said their Officers were killed as a result of some Police Officer plot adds more salt to their wounds. Shame on RS.

The recall will also be national news when it starts and national media will follow the story until the special election takes place and she is removed from office.

Within 36 hours of taking office she completely alienated the entire police force within our community, she hijacked all the city staff’s time for a week trying to do damage control on the terrible publicity she generated for our lovely town. It costs money to hire lawyers for advise and pay overtime to police to monitor reaction she caused. She now has alienated the city council she claimed she wants to work with. This has nothing to do with me and I am caught in the cross fire. You say it is my job to fix this. It is Reinette’s job to make amends to our community. I suggest that she should delete her facebook account and refrained from ranting on social media for her term of four years if she does not see the benefits of resigning from office. That would be a good start for me. My lesson learned is social media is toxic and an unhealthy addiction. Get outside, enjoy our wonderful community, and have real conversations with people face to face.
