He will be ingrained in our memories forever. His deeds, along with the rest of his fellow astronauts, may never be seen again. President Kennedy got the ball rolling in the country's race to the stars against the Soviet Union. After Sputnik was sent into space by the commies, America and its leaders thought we better get moving if we don't want the USSR to be the only country in space. So an inspiration was created, let us get to the moon by the end of the 60's.
America responded and the quest was on in earnest. I was in my teens during the 60's and I remember the daily news updates on the progress. I love sci-fi and this was even better! We got to know about these astronauts, usually after they went into space. Alan Shepard, John Glenn and the others became household names. America needed heroes. I think all nations and peoples want heroes, and these men fit the bill. My goodness, sitting in a small capsule on top of a huge rocket full of combustible fuel! Then off into the black environs of space! No real computers as we know them today but man made calculations on every aspect of the journey. HG Wells and Jules Verne would be envious.
So we all watched as Neil Armstrong dropped down on the planet some humans thought was made of cheese. The flag of our great country was planted and miraculously the men returned to earth. Kennedy's wish was turned into reality and the world had a successful venture into the stars.
I wish Neil Armstrong a place next to the "big guy" in the sky. We need more brave souls like Armstrong and his minions to go where "no man has gone before".
God Bless you and your soul Neil Armstrong, you are missed already.
